Adding a shade port to your home or commercial property is one of the best ways to increase the value of your home or business. Shade ports are a cost-effective shade solution for your vehicle or an aesthetically appealing entertainment area.

There are some factors that influence the cost of adding a shade solution to your home or commercial premises. In this blog, we will discuss some of the most important factors when it comes to the cost of a shade port installation and ultimately how much you will pay.

How much should you budget for a standard shade port?

In South Africa, the price of a standard shade port ranges from R8 500 to R 15 500 (excl. Vat) which includes design, manufacture and installation.

What are the factors that affect the price of a shade port project?

What are the factors that affect the price of a shade port project?

1. Dimensions:

The size, scale and proportions of your shade port will be one of the main drivers of its cost. The price of a shade port is predominantly dependent on its size in square meters. Bigger shade ports require more materials and more pole support to ensure a strong durable shade structure. Shade ports can be supplied in standardised sizes or can be custom built according to your size requirements.

For example, a shade port for one car will cost less than a shade port for three cars, as the surface area of the build will be less for one car compared to a shade port covering for three cars.

2. Shape & Style Selection:

Shade ports come in a variety of shapes such as a dome-shaped, arched and pyramid shaped shade ports. Your selected format will be dependent on which shape aligns with your property, styling or branding aesthetic. The shape and format of your shade port selection will influence the materials required and will therefore influence the cost to install it.

The most common shade port shapes that our customers select are square or rectangular, ideal for shading large areas with minimal support structures needed. If you need to shade a very large area, we would recommend using a long ridge shade port. Using 6 columns and 2 rafters, a single piece of fabric can be used to cover the large area. No shading gaps will appear, as it would when you join a rectangular or square shade port. Hexagonal shaped shade ports are a perfect solution for areas that differ from standard shapes, allowing for more complicated layouts.

3. Fabric & Materials Selection:

The cost of the materials and fabrics is one of the most common factors that increases or decreases your shade port price. Shade ports are made up of structural materials and shade netting. Good shade port companies will prioritise the quality of the finished product rather than give you a sub-par product.

Structural material options are:

  • Aluminum
  • Wood
  • Glass
  • Netting

A combination of materials can also be used and these materials will directly affect the cost of your shade port. For example, aluminum costs more than wood because wood is made of natural materials.

Another determining cost factor will be your fabric selection. Our shade ports are structural frames, made with galvanised steel covered with a High Density Polyethylene Shade net that is triple stitched with a monofilament thread and we apply the French seam stitching technique. This makes the product super resilient to most weather conditions with little to no maintenance.  Should there be storm damage, components and nets are easily replaced at low cost and the fabric has a 2 year warranty against UV breakdown and mildew. The shade netting is UV stabilized and comes in a wide range of colours. You can choose from UV protection 0-95% and water resistant from 0-100%. With a wide range of customisable options, we have the ability to create incredibly unique structures, while maintaining maximum functionality.

4. Support structure required:

Your shade port price will be affected by the characteristics of the location where the shade port needs to be installed. If your shade port is situated next to a building or walls, it can simply be wall mounted, if the shade port does not have a nearby support structure, it will need a cantilever support structure. A cantilever is a rigid structural element that extends horizontally and is supported at only one end instead of using 4 poles in your structure. Cantilever structures consists of 2 upright poles at the back of the structure only. The price will vary based on the structure you choose.
